IGZO technology, as Sharp's current main direction of attack, has reached the level of mass production and has been applied to Sharp's own Aquos Phone Zeta SH-02E mobile phone. At present, the product has achieved good results in power consumption and energy saving, known as "two days without charging". In addition, Sharp also continues to improve IGZO LCD, and make it more energy-saving and have better display effect.
Sharp said that it has found that IGZO LCD panel has the function of "LCD idle stop", which can stop refreshing when the picture is not updated, and continuously display still images. According to Mr. Imai, "the LCD idle speed and the car engine are somewhat detailed. The car will shut down the engine when it stops, thus reducing the overall energy consumption.". Ordinary LCD displays refresh the picture at a frequency of 60 times per second (60Hz), while IGZO LCD can reduce the refresh speed to 1 time per second (1Hz) according to the situation. In this way, it can bring lower power consumption and get better overall endurance, which will be greatly improved for current mobile phones and tablets.
The idle speed stop function of liquid crystal is realized by making use of the characteristic that the IGZO mode thin-film transistor is not easy to leak out charges. Thin film transistors act as valves to control the charge flow in and out of LCD pixels. In the past, amorphous silicon leaked a lot of charges when closing the valve, and was in a "dripping state when the tap was turned off". However, thin film transistors using IGZO are not easy to leak charges, and even if they stop refreshing, they can continue to display images. The chance to discover this feature is also quite accidental. In the IGZO experiment, the developer accidentally found that the image did not disappear after the power supply of the screen was disconnected. On this basis, the development has developed to the current "low refresh rate" technical feature.
At this time, we can imagine the future use of the "LCD idle stop" feature. Sharp can intelligently optimize the screen according to this feature, and automatically reduce the refresh speed when reading e-books and other static environments, thus reducing the power consumption of the screen to a lower level. On terminal devices, screens have always been a major power consumer. I hope this new feature of IGZO can improve screen energy consumption.
