When Microsoft released the new Windows Phone 8 system at the developer conference in June, it told everyone that the previous Windows Phone devices could not be upgraded to WP8 system, but only to WP7.8 system. This practice has annoyed many old users, which means that the classic Lumia 800, Lumia 900 and other single core models cannot support WP8. But recently, foreign developers slapped Microsoft with examples. He successfully ran WP8 on HTC HD2. This indirectly proves that in the evolution process from WP7 to WP8, Microsoft has repeatedly given up on old users.
Let's take a look at the relevant information first.
First of all, HTC HD2 is a familiar machine. It is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 chipset and initially runs Windows mobile 6.5 operating system. In the later tuning and improvement, this machine has successfully run Android (including MIUI), WP7 and Meego systems, and again won the title of "the king of machine brushing". Now HD2 has captured another city and successfully run the latest WP8 system. Although HD2 can only start the WP8 system for the time being, and can't make calls or take photos, it is believed that with the further development, it will eventually be able to control WP8 normally.
HD2 can successfully run WP8 system, which shows that on the hardware level, a single core can fully support WP8. Microsoft has never given the reason why WP7 cannot upgrade WP8. Here we can also analyze the reason. There are several possibilities:
1. In terms of hardware, the single core chip can support WP8, but the performance may be insufficient, affecting the experience, so Microsoft has to cut it down.
2. A single core chip can support WP8, but if Microsoft needs to develop a driver for it, it will take a lot of manpower and material resources to simply scrap it, saving money and time. After all, the interests of commercial companies come first.
3. If WP7 upgrades WP8, consumers may no longer be willing to pay for expensive new models, but experience WP8 directly through old models. In this way, how can WP8 make money? Cut it out for the sake of interests.
The third reason also applies to Nokia. People may think that Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 are great and die, but Nokia doesn't think so. How can Lumia 920 come to market today if the old ones don't go and the new ones don't come and give up? Therefore, Elop has always appeared in everyone's eyes with a smiling face.
In fact, not only Microsoft has done this, but Apple also has its own hidden side( )。 Apple regularly upgrades its devices, but many users find that even the most basic operation of entering letters will be delayed after upgrading the system of old devices (such as touch 4). Apple said that the performance of the old equipment is not enough to take on the heavy task, but no matter how poor the performance is, it is not even competent for typing, is it? Apple's practice of not giving up old devices has been recognized by many users in the early stage. Obviously, Apple is much better than Microsoft.
