Avatar, which once set a box office record, gave the audience an unprecedented sense of reality. But if you want to enjoy this 3D technology, you must wear special 3D glasses, which makes the audience feel uncomfortable. It's OK to wear 3D glasses occasionally just for watching movies. However, it would be very troublesome to wear 3D glasses for commonly used handheld devices such as mobile phones. If you want to experience the fun of 3D without wearing eyes, you need to use naked 3D technology.

At present, naked eye 3D mainly includes light barrier, cylindrical lens technology, pointing light source and MLD technology.

Light barrier type

These stripes are tens of microns wide, and the light passing through them forms a vertical thin stripe grid pattern, which is called "parallax barrier". This technology uses the parallax barrier between the backlight module and the LCD panel. In the stereoscopic display mode, when the image that should be seen by the left eye is displayed on the LCD screen, opaque stripes will block the right eye; Similarly, when an image that should be seen by the right eye is displayed on the LCD screen, opaque stripes will block the left eye. By separating the visual images of the left eye and the right eye, the viewer can see 3D images.

The advantage of this technology is its cost advantage. At present, Sharp's 3D mobile phones and Nintendo's 3DS game consoles all use this technology. However, the screen brightness with this technology is low.

Cylindrical lens technology

Cylindrical lens technology is also known as biconvex lens or micro cylindrical lens 3D technology. Its biggest advantage is that its brightness will not be affected. The principle of cylindrical lens 3D technology is to add a layer of cylindrical lens in front of the LCD screen, so that the image plane of the LCD screen is located on the focal plane of the lens, so that the pixels of the image under each cylindrical lens are divided into several sub pixels, so that the lens can project each sub pixel in different directions. So the eyes look at the display screen from different angles and see different sub pixels.

The cylindrical lens technology does not affect the screen brightness as the light barrier technology does, so its display effect is better than the latter. The representative manufacturers using this technology include Philips in Europe, Luchen Electronic Technology in China, and Wofei Naked Eye 3D.

Point to light source

The pointing light source 3D technology is combined with two sets of LEDs, and the fast response LCD panel and driving method are used to allow 3D content to enter the viewer's left and right eyes in order to exchange images to generate parallax, so that the human eye can feel the 3D effect.

MLD technology

The MLD (multi layer display) technology of PureDepth Company in the United States can make text and pictures present 3D images without using special glasses by overlapping two LCD panels at certain intervals. The advantage of this technology is that the user will not have side effects such as dizziness and headache, and there is no too big limit on the viewing angle of the viewer.
Although the current 3D technology is not mature, especially in terms of resolution, visual angle and visual distance, there are still many shortcomings, but with the development of technology, I believe that in the near future, we can all experience realistic 3D effects on our mobile phones without glasses.
