Nokia Lumia 1020 - 41 megapixel digital negative
Nokia Lumia 1020 - 41 megapixel digital negative

Earlier, Nokia updated the latest software version, code named Lumia Black, for its Lumia series of mobile phones. After updating this version, Lumia 1020, which was born for shooting, has the function of shooting and storing digital negatives. What's the use of this function, and what's the difference for our shooting? Let's have a try.

After updating Lumia Black, if you want to shoot digital negatives, remember to set the photographing mode to 5MP+38MP (the saved digital negatives are in DNG format). Some readers may see that it is not 38MP, but 34MP. The reason is that you did not set the picture scale to 4:3, but 16:9. In fact, setting the scale to 4:3 is the full pixel size, When adjusted to 16:9, the size will be cut.

Before the positive film starts, let's first understand the DNG format:

In the digital photography workflow, the original data file format is becoming increasingly popular and is becoming a hot fashion, because it provides more creative control space for professional creatives. However, various cameras may use many different raw data formats, and the specifications of these formats cannot be publicly obtained - which means that not every raw data file can be read by many software applications. Therefore, there are risks in using these proprietary original data files as a long-term archiving solution, but it is more challenging to share these files in multiple complex workflows.

Is there a solution that can solve this increasingly prominent problem? Digital Negative Film (DNG) is a public archive format for raw data files generated by digital cameras. DNG solves the problem of the lack of open standards between the original data files of different models of cameras, thus helping to ensure that photographers can access their files in the future.

The above is excerpted from Baidu Encyclopedia.

Let's just say something: in fact, the RAW of each camera manufacturer is different and not open, and RAW is the electronic data that has not been processed. It needs the software developed by the corresponding manufacturer or image processing company to solve the RAW to display images and adjust photos. DNG is a general digital negative format developed by Adobe, which is converted from RAW and has actually been edited, but it also retains the metadata of photos, and can also rely on Camera Raw and other software for digital post production. Because the RAW of each manufacturer, or even different models of cameras from the same manufacturer, is different, Adobe has to re write processing software for each new camera in order to support the RAW file of its camera. In order to change this dilemma, Adobe introduced a unified digital negative format - DNG.

To get to the point, Photoshop itself does not support the function of viewing and adjusting digital negatives, but you only need to install the latest version of Camera Raw plug-in to achieve the function of viewing and adjusting digital negatives. This is the screenshot of the DNG format sample taken by Lumia 1020 on the Camera Raw plug-in of Photoshop.

The main part that we need to adjust can be basically completed by the basic adjustment panel.

To be able to shoot digital negatives, it is basically not necessary to consider the problems such as incorrect exposure, accurate tone, and white balance adjustment. You just need to focus, compose, and press the shutter. As shown in the figure, just by simply adjusting the sliders of various parameters, the performance of the sample has been greatly changed. For the first time, it won't be adjusted. You can try every slider. Xiao Bian now wants to simulate the HDR effect.

After the adjustment of the basic panel, you can choose to enlarge the sample to further sharpen the picture. Since Lumia 1020 has 41 million megapixels, the previous picture still retains considerable detail after 100% enlargement. If it is troublesome, you can drag the definition directly on the basic panel.

Other adjustments are almost the same, but Xiaobian wants the sky to be bluer. We can go to the "HSL/Gray" panel and select the saturation. Since Xiaobian only wants the sky to be bluer, we have separately adjusted the blue slider to make the sky bluer. However, if there are too many blue parts in the picture, This adjustment will affect other blues, which needs to be used according to the situation.

Then turn the brightness panel to dim the blue brightness, so that the blue of the sky will be more intense.

Because DNG retains metadata as well, color temperature and hue can be adjusted freely. You can discard the color of objects and adjust the desired hue.

After the other parts are adjusted, we can save and export the photos. The default is to save them in DNG format. If you want to export JPG format, remember to select the correct saving format.

In this way, our image is processed. Compared with the original image, the gap is obvious enough. Click the small picture to view the large picture.

This is the processing of another sample, so I don't need to say much about it. Just take a screenshot of my own adjustment. The basic processing methods are the same.

Since the lens halo of this picture is relatively large, we can adjust it according to the effect we like in the lens correction → manual → lens halo.

Finally, compare the sample with the original picture. You can also click the small picture to see the large picture.

At the end of the article, let's put some slightly processed samples and compare them with the original picture. The samples were taken by Lumia 1020.

Lumia 1020 is able to shoot digital negatives in DNG format, which really improves the playability of this mobile phone, and also makes this mobile phone a step closer to a more professional camera. Maybe you will say that it's not boring to take a picture with your mobile phone. It's better to take a picture with your mobile phone as soon as you press it. It's true that fool shooting is very important, but the more professional and manual mobile camera will be more attractive than the small editor. Maybe the audience is different. Just like to record life, don't want to bother, it is more important to shoot like a fool. But for users who want more playability and are not afraid of trouble, more manual functions and the ability to shoot digital negatives are love!
