Analysis of the world's first A7 quad core chip Quanzhi A31

In 2011, Quanzhi appeared in the domestic tablet computer market as a dark horse, which attracted many peers' attention. According to Digitime statistics, in 2012, the total number of tablet computers shipped on the mainland was nearly 60 million, while Quanzhi became the biggest winner with the supply of 22 million chips. Other manufacturers such as Ruixin Micro, Amlogic Semiconductor, NewShoreline, nVIDIA, etc. were left behind. In fact, during the period from 2011 to 2012, Quanzhi only relied on a single core A8 core chip to seize the market. When other manufacturers launched dual cores, Quanzhi did not respond quickly, but from the final result, Quanzhi's calculation was not wrong.

Over the dual core, Quanzhi recently launched the first four core flat chip in China, Quanzhi A31. At present, several products with this chip have been launched, such as the Onda V972 quad core tablet just released a few days ago. In contrast, Quanzhi is a step ahead of another domestic quad core chip manufacturer, Ruixin Micro, and it will take some time for Ruixin Micro quad core tablet to be launched.

Quanzhi A31 is the first quad core processor based on ARM Cortex-A7 core, which is different from A9 quad core launched by Ruixin Microprocessor. The ARM Cortex-A7 processor belongs to the Cortex-A series and is based on the ARMv7-A architecture. Its feature is that it provides excellent low-power performance while ensuring performance.

The architecture and function set of the Cortex-A7 processor are identical to those of the Cortex-A15 processor. The difference is that the microarchitecture of the Cortex-A7 processor focuses on providing the best energy efficiency. The energy efficiency of a single Cortex-A7 processor is five times that of the ARM Cortex-A8 processor, and its performance is improved by 50%, while its size is only one fifth of that of the ARM Cortex-A8 processor.

As an independent processor, Cortex-A7 is easier to control costs while ensuring performance. It can provide excellent experience for users on the basis of providing an entry price. With the development of network applications, these entry level products will redefine the connection and Internet use.

Take the recently released Angda V972 quad core tablet as an example to see the detailed performance of Quanzhi A31. The A31 quad core processor has greatly reduced power consumption and heat generation while ensuring performance. The A31 processor of Onda V972 tablet is equipped with 1M two-level cache, which can bring more than twice the data processing and transmission speed and improve the tablet experience.

Quanzhi A31 uses a 64bit processor, which doubles the bandwidth of the current mainstream 32bit processor. It also uses dual channel DDR3 memory for better speed performance.

The Quanzhi A31 integrates the Imaging Power VR SGX544MP2 dual core graphics display unit from the same company as the graphics chips of Apple's iPad series and Kindle fire series. The pixel fill rate is up to 3000M/S, and the triangle rendering is also up to 100M/S. Officially, the A31's overall graphics performance is more than 200% faster than the same quad core Tegra 3, 150% faster than the iPad 2, and close to the level of the New iPad.

Summary:

The Quanzhi A31 adopts the Cortex-A7 architecture, which is still somewhat different from Cortex-A9. However, its performance should not be a problem for mainstream applications. Its advantage is that it can bring better power control and reduce the overall cost. Judging from the previous A10 and A13, the Quanzhi A31 will still take the low-cost route. At present, the Onda V972 high-end tablet equipped with high-definition Retina retina screen is only priced at 1299 yuan, and the overall cost performance is excellent. With the entry of other manufacturers' four core products, the price of A31 based tablets will be further reduced, which may eventually occupy the mainstream tablet market with the shipment advantage. In this view, in the next 2013, the tablet computer industry will still have many attractions. We can wait and see which one will win.
