A9 Fight Again in the Jianghu NVIDIA's New Tegra4i Analysis

On CES2013, NVIDIA launched the world shaking Tegra4 processor. The four core A15 architecture and the 72 core GPU made us salivate. Just when people were worried that the quad core A15 would cause serious power consumption problems when it was placed on the mobile phone, NVIDIA timely launched Tegra4i, which uses the quad core Cortex-A9 r4 CPU and 60 core GPU, and integrates the LTE baseband.

Although the name is similar, the architecture of Tegra 4i is very different from that of Tegra 4. See Figure ▼ for details

 

The comparison of Tegra 4 series, Tegra 4 (Wayne) and Tegra 4i (Grey), can clearly see the difference between their positioning, Superphone/Tablet and Smartphone. It seems that Tegra 4 is used for flagship phones and tablets, while Tegra 4i is used for low-end phones. It is also obvious from the figure that Tegra 4i is equipped with a built-in baseband, while Tegra 4 needs to be equipped with a baseband ▼

 

With the launch of Tegra 4i, NVIDIA also brought a reference platform mobile phone called "Phoenix Reference Phone". In addition to the dutiful use of Tegra 4i, it is also equipped with a 5-inch 1080P screen. However, this mobile phone is aimed at developers, not consumers, in order to better improve the game efficiency of manufacturers ▼

 

Tegra 4i still maintains the structure of 4+1 (four main cores+one companion core), uses a four core Cortex-A9 r4 core, the frequency is 2.3GHz, and the manufacturing process is 28nm. The Cortex-A9 r4 core used by Tegra 4i has not been used by other products so far, so the extent of its performance improvement is still unknown. Fortunately, the core frequency of Tegra 4i is very high, so the CPU's computing performance will certainly be greatly improved compared with the mainstream quad core processors. In terms of the GPU performance that we pay more attention to, the GPU performance comparison between Tegra 2 and Tegra 3 and the SoC in the same period in the past has been at a disadvantage. This time, Tegra 4i brings the Geforce ULP with 60 cores. Although there is a gap between Tegra 4i and Tegra 4's 72 cores, the progress is still considerable.

 

There is not much information about Tegra 4i's GPU. According to Tegra4's 74.8 GFLOPS computing capability, we expect Tegra 4i's GPU computing capability to be between APQ8064 and Exynos5250. Another feature of Tegra 4i is that it integrates the baseband of the Nvidia i500 LTE, making it easier for users to join the LTE network. The most exciting thing for domestic users is that among the networks supported by the baseband of Tegra 4i is TD-LTE (namely the 4G network of China Mobile), which also makes us look forward to the customized machine of Tegra 4i brought by China Mobile.

 

In terms of photography, Tegra 4i also has many innovations, adding advanced technologies such as Persistent Tap to Track, HDR Pano, and Always On HDR. ▼

 

Although the specification of Tegra 4i is very powerful, NVIDIA said that mobile phones equipped with Tegra 4i will not appear until the end of 2013, when it may face many strong impacts from other brands.
