The concept of single hand operation and interaction of large screen mobile phones in my eyes
Igao7 - Brief 2014-04-17 00:41

Editor's Note: mobile screen It's getting bigger and bigger. It's more and more difficult to operate with one hand. What size of screen is the most suitable for people to use? There was a period of time when industry experts had a lot of discussions on this issue, but finally they could not reach a conclusion. Among users, there are different views on the experience of using large screen mobile phones by one hand. The following article is from a junior student Thoughts on this issue. What do you think about the interactive experience of single hand operation of large screen mobile phones? You can also participate in our discussion.

The following is the original text of the author:

Sect Leader Qiao once said that the 3.5-inch mobile phone screen is the most suitable One hand operation It should be said that this theory is half right. The 3.5-inch operating range is the most comfortable for most people. This view does not conflict with our desire for a larger screen. The focus is on interaction design.

We hope the screen is larger, because we hope the mobile phone can bring us better visual effects, rather than a larger control area. Therefore, we need a common button or sliding action only in the area where our thumb can reach comfortably and conveniently interactive system

This is just my idea for the single hand operation of large screen mobile phones. Next, I will elaborate on the specific implementation methods.

1、 Improvements to the dialling interface and virtual keyboard - Zoom out and move the keyboard right (left):

In fact, this can not be explained too much, because Samsung's Note2 and Huawei's Mate Already done very well. It should be pointed out that for mobile phones with a screen of more than 4 inches, the maximum height of the dial keypad and virtual keyboard should be limited to less than 1/2 of the screen by default; Mobile phones over 4.5 inches should use a side keyboard similar to Note 2 and Mate.

2、 Improvement of notice bar - right edge sliding gesture and reverse order notice bar:

It should be said that Android's Notification Bar It is commonly used by users, but as the mobile phone screen grows larger, the common action of pulling down the notification bar can no longer be completed with the thumb. My idea is to pull down the notice bar through a gesture, as shown in the figure. This gesture is an action of sliding down on the right edge of the screen. The notice bar needs to be improved by moving the quick control button down. Finally, arrange the notification messages in the notification bar in reverse order, that is, the first notification displayed should appear at the bottom. In short, that is to turn the whole notice board upside down.

3、 Improve the application content area - provide a certain degree of drop-down space:

General application program The interface design is divided into three sections, namely, the top label bar, the middle content area, and the bottom button bar (some applications remove the top bar or bottom bar in order to obtain more readable space).

Let's talk about the content area in the middle first, and we'll talk about the top and bottom columns later. Just a little abstract. Take Android's native SMS interface for example. After opening the interface, pull down the SMS list. The list will not move, and an out of range message will appear at the top Animation effects For mobile phones with large screens, it is difficult for us to press the top 2-3 messages without adjusting the palm holding mode. Therefore, my idea is that the content area in the middle can be pulled down to 1/2 of the screen, and then there will be an out of bounds animation effect. In this way, you can select the content at the top by pulling down.

4、 Improvement of application top and bottom columns

Here is my ideal application interface design specification: generally, it is divided into three columns. The top column displays labels and other information, and the button is not displayed. The original button should be moved down to the bottom column or hidden to the menu; The content area in the middle can only be pulled down; The bottom column can be divided into two situations: 1. If there are three or less buttons to be displayed, consider using the Fuubo Weibo client style shortcut button in the lower right corner (this is an excellent design); 2. Conventional design.

Let's illustrate with examples:

1. Native browser:

In order to increase the visual area, the native browser adopts the design of canceling the bottom bar, and the interface is very simple. Improvement: You may guess what I'm going to say, that is, move the top bar down (figure). The improvement is not enough here. The interface of the native browser is too simple. As a result, some commonly used buttons can only be found by pressing the menu key. In this way, daily operations are very inconvenient. My suggestion is to add two buttons - "Add Bookmark" and "Bookmark". Ordinary users' daily operations of using the browser include: entering address, bookmarking, back, adding bookmarks, switching windows, and searching. So it is enough to have one address bar and three buttons at the bottom. The address bar is also a search bar (the default search engine can also be changed in settings). There is also a button "back" at the bottom of your screen.

2. UC Browser:

When it comes to native browsers, let's mention that the Chinese people use more browsers. Compared with native browsers, UC seems to know more about Chinese people and is more convenient to use. However, the UC interface is obviously too complex. When we use the mobile phone in the idiocy mode to enter the UC interface, we will find that we are at a loss for the choice of UC and the function classification is disorderly

I first proposed how to improve the UC interface, and then the reason.

Similarly, remove the bottom bar and move the top bar down. Remove the search box and the rightmost button in the original top bar, and add "Home" and "Window" from the right.

Why remove the search bar: because the address bar itself is a search bar. UC's search bar also includes optional search pages, novels, maps, shopping or pictures, so we just need to add these to the interface after the address bar is selected.

Why is there a "Home" button more than native browsers? It should be said that it is a habit problem. The home page of UC is not a webpage, but a navigation page, which includes 6~9 tags to show the website you have visited recently or often or the website you have selected regularly. This is the convenience of UC. In contrast, the home page of a native browser is just a web address, which should be a function used by relatively few people. We can remove this button for simplicity.

Why remove the menu key from the bottom bar: isn't the menu key one of the three (or four) keys at the bottom of your phone's screen?!

3. Native SMS interface:

The standard three-stage design is adopted.

The top bar only shows the words "SMS" and the number of unread SMS, which is a design specification worth referring to. There are only two buttons on the bottom bar, which can be changed (note that "change" is used instead of "improvement"). The change is the button at the bottom right corner of the Fuubo Weibo client I mentioned above. This kind of button has several advantages: (1) simplicity: it replaces the bottom bar and makes more visible space for the screen; (2) Efficiency: After you are familiar with the button, you can slide it directly without stopping to choose, without thinking at all; (3) Relatively intuitive: Compared with the original bottom bar, it is certainly less intuitive, but compared with other gestures, it is more intuitive because of the function of clicking the display button.

4. QQ2013:

With the development of mobile qq, its functionality has become very powerful. The optimization of the interface for single handed operation is only the pull-down improvement in the middle content area, and it is harmless to have two buttons that are not commonly used in the top bar. Pardon me: (1) I moved the setting button on the IOS version again. How can you embarrass me with the menu button at the bottom of my phone?! (2) Can you put "conversation" and "contact" in the same content area? The left side of the "Friends" tag should be the conversation, right? The most commonly used action to switch between conversation and friends list is so incoherent. You need to constantly click on the bottom left corner instead of sliding left and right?! This is not scientific!

5. Sina Weibo official client:

I complained directly: (1) It is inconvenient to put the function button of microblogging, which is so commonly used and Sina encourages people to use more, in the upper left corner; (2) Like qq, the "more" (actually, menu or settings) of IOS is put on the interface, which occupies space and is functionally repeated with the menu key at the bottom of the screen. In comparison, Fuubo's interface is much cleaner than the official interface, let alone its operational efficiency.

I've talked about the improvement of the application. I can't describe it in detail. I just mentioned a few typical examples, but the general improvement ideas and principles are basically clear.

So far, my concept of single hand operation of large screen mobile phones has been fully elaborated. If there are more ideas about this in the future, I will give you a sequel.
