Performance test of Hisense Kirin 920
Performance test of Hisense Kirin 920

After experiencing the K3V2 and Kirin 910 two Cortex-A9 core processors, HiSilicon finally officially launched the Kirin 920 processor based on Cortex-A15 core in June 2014. Kirin 920 is also the first eight core processor of Hisense, which uses big The LITTLE architecture is composed of four Cortex-A15 cores and four Cortex-A7 cores, and supports GTS technology to achieve "eight cores open". How about its actual performance? We will conduct performance test immediately:

First, let's understand the structure of Kirin 920 Figure of:

As you can see, the CPU of Kirin 920 consists of four core Cortex-A7 and four core Cortex-A15, which have 512KB and 2MB L2 caches respectively. The GPU is Mali-T628mp4 (or T624mp4. The single core performance of T624 and T628 is the same). In addition, the Balong baseband supports the high-speed network of LTE Cat6 at most.

The protagonist of our test is Glory 6, model H60-L01. It uses Kirin 920 processor, frequency 1.7GHz (A15 core)+1.3GHz (A7 core), 3G Ram and 16G Rom, and 1080P resolution screen.

The following is the actual situation:

In the evaluation of Anthare, since Anthare has just released the V5 Alpha version, we will also test the 4.5 version and the 5.0 version at the same time. The first is the 4.5 version. The score of 38000 is enough to show the excellent performance of Kirin 920. The total score and Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974AC) At the same level, CPU performance is more prominent, and the power of eight core full open is also well reflected here ▼

3D drawing also exceeded 10000 points, which was good ▼

Next V5 Alpha Glory 6 scores more than 41000, single core performance scores 1605, and CPU single core floating point scores 1923, which are relatively low. Similar to the Exynos 5422 with eight cores, the Kirin 920 also pulls ▼ on Ram performance and CPU multi-core performance

The Kirin 920 uses Mali-T624mp4. Since the V5 version of Anthare has a new set of 3D drawing test standards, the 3D drawing performance of different GPUs can finally be reflected by scores. Although there is little difference between V5 and 4.5 in terms of scores, the upper limit of 3D drawing scores of V5 is no longer about 10000, and even some products have achieved 16000 high scores, so Mali-T624mp4's performance in this test is not very good ▼

The hardware decodes 1080P 60FPS ref=15 mp4 video to test the CPU's general performance. Kirin 920's frame number in the first half of the video can reach more than 50 frames, and the second half begins to reduce the frequency. The average frame number of the entire video is close to 47 ▼

Web page Javascript performance Sunspider 1.0.2, tested with Chrome Beta, scored 650ms (the lower the better), and played well ▼

The frame number test of the GBA simulator tests the performance of the CPU single core. It can be seen that one of the A15 cores has the highest occupancy rate, with the frame number approaching 160, which basically meets our team's expectations of 1.7GHz A15 ▼

RAR performance test. This test is to test the performance of the CPU's L2 cache. At the same time, multi-core processors will have a greater advantage in this test. In terms of scores, Kirin 920 performed well, measuring more than 1400KB/s. However, a problem was also found in the test. The measured speed fluctuated greatly, even about 700KB/s. It is estimated that the CPU core did not reach the full open state during the test, so 1467KB/s should not be the limit of Kirin 920 ▼

The GPU performance is also a concern. How about the Mali-T624mp4 performance of the Kirin 920? Let's take a look at the combination of theoretical scoring and games:

GFXBench 3.0, In the performance test of a commonly used GPU, we conducted off screen tests on Manhattan and Tyrannosaurus Rex scenes, and the results showed that the frames in Manhattan were satisfactory, even surpassing the Mali-T628mp6 of Exynos 5420. The performance of the Tyrannosaurus Rex scene is relatively ordinary, and there is still a gap between the number of frames of Mali-T628mp6 ▼

3DMark is also a commonly used GPU performance test. Kirin 920's performance in three scenarios is close to Exynos 5420 ▼

The following is a comparison table of graphics frame number test of mainstream GPUs:

Next, we will use two large games to test the 3D performance of Kirin 920. First, Modern Warfare 4. Here we introduce the yellow font on the virtual key, which is the frame number and frequency information in Glory 6 project mode, Where F is the number of FPS frames, A7 is the opening condition of A7 core, A15 is the opening condition of A15 core, and G is the GPU frequency . In the battle scene at the beginning of the game, the number of frames is less than 20, and the fluency is insufficient. At this time, we can see that four A15 cores are enabled, but they are not in the high-frequency state, and the GPU is only 288MHz ▼

When entering the menu to adjust the gyroscope, A15 turns on the three cores at a low frequency. The GPU is at 480MHz

At the moment after the fierce battle, the number of frames increased to nearly 40. One A15 core is enabled with the frequency of 1.5GHz, and the GPU frequency reaches the maximum of 600MHz. During the game, we found that the GPU of Kirin 920 stayed at the low frequency of 288MHz for a long time

Then comes the real car racing 3. This game supports immersive full screen. We use the built-in frame number detection of the game. At the beginning, there were many cars, and the frame number was less than 30 ▼

When there is one car left, the frame number increases to more than 30. We call up the virtual key to see the above information, Only one A15 core is still enabled, and the frequency is only 1.2GHz, while the GPU frequency is still 288MHz

From the above two games, we find that the Kirin 920 is conservative in both CPU and GPU allocation strategies, The CPU usually only turns on one A15 core, and the frequency is not high. The GPU is maintained at 288MHz for a long time. If further optimization can be made in the later stage, two A15 cores can be opened in the game, and the GPU frequency can be stabilized to about 500MHz, it is believed that the game performance will be improved.

Let's take a look at the storage performance of Kirin 920, and use A1 SD Bench to test. In the eMMC test, the reading speed of Glory 6 is 76MB/s, and the writing speed is about 16MB/s. It is believed that eMMC4.4 or eMMC4.5 chips are used. Ram's copy performance is 2420.91MB/s, with more optimization space ▼

Finally, let's take a look at the frequency allocation of the Kirin 920 in daily use. First, we use the built-in engineering mode to check the frequency (enable forced GPU rendering during the test), and slide the system initiator The quad core A7 is enabled with a frequency of 1.3GHz. In addition, an A15 core is enabled with a frequency of 1.5GHz ▼

Sina Weibo, "All eight cores open" The core of A7 and A15 is the highest, and the GPU frequency is low, 120MHz ▼

Sohu News, Turn on the quad core A7 with a frequency of 1.3GHz, one A15 core with a frequency of 806MHz and a GPU frequency of 240MHz ▼

In order to more clearly see the impact of Kirin 920's "GTS" technology on frequency, we cooperate with third-party applications to detect frequency. In the setting menu, The eight cores are fully open, while the A7 core has two frequencies of 1.2GHz and 1.3GHz, and the A15 core has two frequencies of 1.7GHz and 1.2GHz. It can be seen that the Kirin 920 is flexible in frequency allocation Instead of "living and dying together" ▼ like the core of Exynos 5422

When taking pictures, Four core A7 is fully open, two of which are at high frequency 1.3GHz, while two A15 cores are open, and the frequency is 806MHz ▼

From this test, we can see that the performance of the Kirin 920 is still relatively strong. Compared with the previous Kirin 910, the performance can almost be described as reborn. The introduction of quad core A15 core and GTS technology provides a good performance guarantee for Kirin 920. The Mali-T624mp4 is also sufficient for most users. In large games, Kirin 920 still has much room for optimization, which is specifically reflected in the selection of A15 core and the control of GPU frequency. In addition, Ram performance also has greater room for improvement.
