Galaxy S4 It is a brand new flagship mobile phone announced by Samsung at its independent press conference on March 14. It is also a star class product that attracts the attention of the world. It is unique in design, configuration and system. We also got the international version of the Galaxy S4 I9500 and made a preliminary evaluation of it.
The following test uses the engineering version of the Galaxy S4 international version I9500. There will be some differences between the firmware and the official version. This evaluation represents the engineering level and is only for reference.
appearance
Through the presentation of the Galaxy S4 press conference and the publicity of various media, I believe that everyone is familiar with the appearance of the Galaxy S4. On the whole, it still has a strong Samsung style, and Galaxy S3 、 Galaxy Note II It comes down in one continuous line. Compared with the 4.8 inch screen of the previous generation, the screen of this generation has reached 5 inch full HD resolution, with a narrow border, bringing visual shock ▼
The biggest difference from previous products is that they use an ultra narrow frame, and a sensor ▼ is added to the left beside the earpiece
The design behind the logo is similar to that of Galaxy Note II, but when the fill light is placed below the camera, the camera becomes larger, but the logo is in the same form as Galaxy S3 ▼

The frame uses the "metal like wire drawing process", and it is flat. In fact, it is engineering plastic, but it still feels very metallic. In addition, there is another ring of narrow frame on the edge of the screen. On the left is the volume key ▼

On the right is the key ▼
There is also a small slot ▼ on the right side for opening the rear cover
The top is a 3.5mm interface, noise reduction microphone and an infrared transmitter that the flagship mobile phone recently likes to add ▼
The bottom is very conventional, which is microUSB and microphone ▼
In the tradition of Galaxy series, the back cover can be removed, and the battery can also be replaced. It supports tf card expansion. The SIM card uses micro SIM ▼

The figure below shows the Galaxy Note II, Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S3 α (Japanese version). It can be seen from the figure that when using the same wallpaper, the color of Galaxy S4 is more realistic than that of Galaxy S3 ▼

Galaxy S4's screen visual angle performance is also excellent ▼
System UI
Since Galaxy S4 uses a system based on Android 4.2.2, it can be seen from the lock screen interface that it is very similar to the native Android 4.2 system of Nexus 4. You can add some shortcuts ▼ by sliding left and right
The system initiator is still our familiar TouchWiz, but the weather plug-in is more beautiful than before, and some redesigned built-in plug-ins ▼ have also been added
Since the Android 4.2.2 system is used, the pull-down bar can also be divided into two forms. The single finger pull-down is similar to the previous Samsung mobile phone layout, and also displays notifications. On this basis, add shortcuts and brightness adjustment ▼ that are not available in native Android 4.2
Double finger pull-down is the same as native Android 4.2.2. It is also a shortcut expansion. Shortcuts support user-defined ▼
Compared with the Galaxy S3, the color of the Galaxy S4 dial panel is more dynamic. The interface for entering information also uses a light color ▼
System information, based on Android 4.2.2, phone model is GT-I9500. The setting interface is divided into four columns. It may take some time for ordinary users to get used to this layout ▼
Samsung has always been willing to add many humanized functions to each generation of flagship phones, and this time there are many new elements, such as the group entertainment function Group Play between Samsung phones, which allows Samsung mobile home to share music, images, documents, etc., and even support group games (temporarily only supports sharing between Galaxy S4) ▼

photograph
Galaxy S4 uses a 13 million Sony stack camera, and the aperture has finally increased to F2.2. The following is a screenshot of some camera operations ▼
Since the engineering machine we have is not so perfect in the debugging of the camera, there are still some problems in the actual shooting effect. As for the photographic performance of the Galaxy S4, we will conduct a detailed test after the firmware of the Galaxy S4 is stable.

performance
As the first mobile phone to use the Samsung Exynos 5 OCTA series SoC, the Galaxy S4 uses the "4+4 core" Exynos 5410, which includes a quad core 1.6GHz Cortex-A15 and a quad core 1.2GHz Cortex-A7. The GPU uses the PowerVR SGX544MP3 with excellent performance and compatibility. We have high expectations for the performance of the Galaxy S4. The following is the performance test of the I9500 engineering machine.
The following is the hardware information viewed through the rabbit evaluation. The CPU frequency detection is incorrect and does not reach 1800MHz. However, there are still some problems in the available RAM due to system optimization. ▼
Theoretical test
Angu rabbit evaluation V3.2.2
Although this test does not represent absolute performance, it can also be used as a reference. The overall performance of Galaxy S4 is at the highest level of Android devices at present, reaching almost 27000 points, which is also the highest score device that the author has tested ▼
Anthare 3D
Compared with the overall score of Anthare's evaluation, the 3D test of the segmented piece is very accurate in measuring the GPU's performance. With its own 1080P resolution, the Galaxy S4 has 27.6 frames, which is believed to be more than 30 frames after optimization ▼
Here also add the performance comparison of other equipment that performed well in this test ▼
Vellamo
Galaxy S4, a web testing software launched by Qualcomm, also performs well in this software, especially in the metal part of hardware performance testing, which rarely exceeds 1000 points, which is similar to the Nexus 10 with Cortex-A15 kernel tested by the author earlier ▼
Comparison with other equipment ▼
Web page Javascript performance test Sunspider
This is a highly referenced test to measure CPU single core performance. The lower the test score, the better. The browser used is Chrome Beta V26 ▼
The result comparison of this test is also very interesting. Although the frequency is 100MHz lower than that of the Nexus 10, the performance of the Galaxy S4 is better. It seems that the Galaxy S4 still has great potential ▼
Decoding performance
During the Exynos 4 series, Samsung supported fewer formats in video decoding than its competitors Exynos 5 OCTA What will it do? We use 1080P videos in different formats to test the Galaxy S4. The test software is BSPlayer version 1.9.

Software decoding
As we all know, Cortex-A15 is much more efficient than other architectures on the market, and this performance gap can be demonstrated through the soft solution of high-definition video. The author used a 1080P 60fps ref=16 MP4 video for testing. From the test, it is found that the Galaxy S4 has an interesting rule in the frequency variation of the CPU.
At the beginning of the video, the CPU frequency of the Galaxy S4 remains at the highest 1.6GHz level. At this time, the frame number of the soft video is also very high, reaching 34 frames ▼
At 1.4GHz, the performance is also very good ▼
When the video goes on for a period of time, the CPU frequency drops to the lowest 600MHz, which directly affects the number of frames of the video soft solution, down to 14 frames. This phenomenon also occurs Evaluation of Optimus G Pro See ▼ above
Use CPU Spy for frequency monitoring. It can be seen that the CPU frequency is kept at high frequency for a short time when playing video ▼
Comparison of software decoding results ▼
It is unclear whether it is the frequency reduction of the A15 kernel or the switching between the A7 and A15 cores. Of course, this test does not show any major problem. After all, the optimization of the current player for Exynos 5410 is basically non-existent. After the Galaxy S4 is officially launched, the firmware will be further improved, and the application adaptation will give full play to the real strength of the Galaxy S4.
summary
This test of the Galaxy S4 engineering version makes us feel the strength of Samsung's flagship, which has many highlights from the screen, configuration and UI. Because of the engineering machine, the current firmware is not very mature, and there will be some small problems in use. It is believed that when the Galaxy S4 is officially launched at the end of this month, the retail version of the machine will give us a deeper sense of the strength of the "Geshi 4".
